Beta Approaching - Devlog 11

 Feedback From Alpha:

Overall, I was genuinely quite surprised with the feedback I got from the alpha. I was shocked at how quickly people responded to the movement. I was under the impression prior to the playtest that the majority of the playtest would be players struggling to move. However, they learned their own method of movement quite quickly. This always is my favourite part of the game - seeing people discover their own ways of moving. No one found the methods that we found to be most effective. Another thing I didn't expect was how enjoyable players found the race modes. They were by far the most popular and all everyone wanted to play. I knew football would end up being really difficult and frustrating for the playtesters. Football was mostly just seeing how players find the movement system while having a goal (pun unintended) to complete. But seeing how much fun the playtesters had with the races was a shock. I think this surprise stems from the fact that I don't think the race game modes have much complexity and that the skill ceiling for these modes is quite low while the skill floor is quite high. A big reason for the multiple game modes is this skill room. These playtests were only roughly 10 minutes long, I'd say roughly half that time was spent figuring out a way to move. The data for the Sprint game mode is all over the place. Games lasted anywhere from 11 seconds to as long as 3 minutes.  Unfortunately, my data collecting scripts were messed up and resulted in the data for a match being printed over 17 thousand times.

 Feedback Implementation For Beta:

I would really like to have the Obstacle Course mode ready for the beta. I'm going to change it up to be more of a just a literal race with obstacles like the Sprint game mode just with obstacles. The 1v1 game mode also should be ready by then. I'll be super interested in seeing how people will respond to it. I've a feeling people will enjoy it but they're probably just going to prefer the races. A revamp of the Royal Rumble game mode is definitely going to be needed. The freeform movement just doesn't suit the movement system. I don't really know how I'm going to make the game mode more linear.  Who knows though, maybe having multiple targets all over the arena will help this problem but I honestly doubt it. Anyway have a good day!
